Before this week, Google automatically activated Gemini in Classroom only for users aged 18 and above.
The change now permits K-12 access, though whether students can actually use the feature depends on whether their school administrator has already turned on Gemini in Classroom, Gemini, and Gemini Notebook. In real-world use, students can now choose their course materials and request that Gemini transform them into flashcards, practice quizzes, or study guides. Google has built specific boundaries around the education variant: the company states that Gemini for Education doesn't use student data to train its models and that human reviewers don't read it. Users younger than 18 receive a different product experience that includes additional guardrails and AI literacy resources, and Gemini is designed to flag content that might be unsuitable for younger users and activate policies intended to block inappropriate responses. Administrators can create separate organizational units for students under 18 and turn off access for that cohort specifically.
The report notes that four experts in AI Weekly's Who's Who directory shared the Times piece, indicating that K-12 default settings are drawing attention from the tracker community. A privacy evaluation referenced by outlets covering the deployment points out that teachers can turn Gemini on or off but have very limited capability to track conversations or get alerts about troubling content, and the under-18 category doesn't differentiate between a six-year-old and a seventeen-year-old. What pushes this from a simple product release into a policy conversation is the default setting.
