Google announced a collection of new AI-powered study features across its Search and Gemini platforms on Wednesday, including AI-generated interactive visuals, 3D simulations, a dedicated student hub, customized practice quizzes, and more. The rollout represents the company's latest push to position Gemini as the go-to AI assistant for students engaged in learning and studying, as it faces competition from rivals like OpenAI and education-focused startups such as Knowt and Gauth, which have launched their own learning and practice tools.

Within Search, students can now create custom tools and simulations designed to help them grasp difficult topics. For instance, a student studying pH levels can search for "pH scale" and receive an interactive visual embedded in an AI Overview that simplifies the fundamentals. They can then pose a follow-up question for something more targeted, like placing citrus fruits on the pH scale, and AI Mode in Search will build an interactive experience customized to that query. Users can also obtain personalized practice quizzes directly in Search covering any subject, including science, math, humanities, foreign languages, and more—by entering a prompt such as "Create a quiz with the most commonly tested vocabulary words to help me prep for the SAT," Search will produce an interactive quiz. In the coming weeks, Lens in Search will introduce a new interactive learning experience enabling students to work through problems by tapping the "Lens" camera icon in the Google app and uploading a photo of their work to get AI explanations of the concept, identification of potential errors, and guidance when stuck. Additionally, students can now request that Search create study documents based on uploaded files, including PDFs, docs, slides, and more—for example, uploading a photo of handwritten notes alongside lecture slides to generate a one-pager outlining key concepts.

The new Gemini features include a capability that allows students to launch multi-step research reports in Gemini Live and then discuss the findings conversationally, with users able to ask Gemini to research a topic and then close the chat or perform other tasks while it works in the background—they'll receive a notification when the report is ready and can then discuss the findings or ask follow-up questions using their voice. Google also announced that Gemini can now produce functional 3D simulations to help users better understand topics, as responses will now include tables, grids, and simulations made specially for the prompt—for instance, entering "show me how DNA works in 3D" will allow users to interactively rotate and zoom into a 3D DNA structure. The tech giant is also rolling out a dedicated hub in the Gemini app that consolidates its learning tools in one location, where users can start a study notebook, create flashcards, take practice quizzes, and more within the hub.

The expansion of AI study tools reflects Google's strategy to capture student users in an increasingly competitive market for educational technology, where AI-powered assistants are becoming central to how learners prepare for exams and understand complex material.
