Barracuda Networks has introduced a new AI security offering aimed at smaller organizations struggling with governance gaps, according to an announcement from the cybersecurity firm. The company's research reveals that 44% of senior IT leaders at companies with 100 to 500 workers, and 49% at firms with 500 to 1,000 workers, rank AI security and governance among their top three capability shortfalls. The new product, called Barracuda AI Data Security, is designed to give managed service providers and resource-limited IT departments centralized tools to protect and oversee generative AI use.
The solution combines AI visibility, data protection, threat defense, and governance into a single platform that makes AI security accessible and scalable, according to the company. Built on the BarracudaONE platform and powered by the Barracuda IQ AI engine, the tool extends protection across more than 1,300 generative AI applications, including Copilot, ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini. It offers complete visibility into AI usage, enables safe use of approved AI tools, examines prompts and uploads in real time, and produces audit-ready evidence of policy enforcement. The system automatically blocks sensitive information such as customer data, passwords, financial records, and proprietary code from reaching generative AI services, with no initial configuration required.
"AI adoption is accelerating faster than most businesses can keep pace, creating one of the most urgent new security and compliance challenges organizations face today," said Neal Bradbury, Chief Product Officer at Barracuda. The company says organizations need a practical way to secure AI as a new attack surface, protect sensitive data, enforce responsible use, and demonstrate compliance while maintaining the confidence to embrace AI adoption as a driver of productivity and innovation. Geoff Turner, CEO of Elevate Technology Group, noted that customers are already adopting AI and working to build policies that fit their specific security frameworks, but added that "policy only goes so far – both the business and IT need safeguards."
The product is explicitly designed to serve underserved businesses and MSPs, contrasting with many leading AI security offerings built for large enterprises. The solution deploys in minutes and provides immediate protection with prebuilt sensitive data detection, using familiar firewall-style workflows that eliminate the need for specialized AI security expertise. It offers guided configuration through Barracuda's Bailey AI Assistant and includes centralized multitenant management for MSPs along with bundled pricing that fits into their service models. The threat detection component blocks prompt injection, jailbreak attempts, hate speech, and policy-violating topics using the Barracuda IQ AI engine's multilayered detection aligned to the OWASP LLM Top 10, while flexible AI policies provide tailored rules for teams, tools, and data types so businesses can deploy AI where it adds value.
Barracuda says the launch represents the first of several innovations that will expand its AI Security suite and help businesses unlock AI's full potential securely. The compliance-ready audit trail captures every AI interaction with one-click exports for insurers and auditors, enabling businesses to demonstrate compliance while accelerating AI adoption. The company positions the tool as a way for MSPs to lead customers through responsible AI adoption with confidence, providing centralized management, strong data protection, and clear evidence of compliance. The speed at which small and midsize organizations are moving toward generative AI tools has created an opening for vendors that can simplify what enterprises typically solve through dedicated teams and custom integrations. Whether that simplicity holds up under the complexity of real-world AI governance remains the test MSPs will ultimately judge the platform against.
