The finding points to a broader trend: Linux desktop adoption has been climbing steadily, particularly among workers, and artificial intelligence workloads appear to be a major driver. The platform's share has grown from 4.1% to 6.4% in North America over the past year, marking significant gains for an operating system long dismissed as niche.
Cloudflare's analysis reveals that desktop Linux use consistently peaks during the work week, suggesting that professional users are leading the shift. The company's dataset excludes bots and AI agents, counting only human users; when bots are included, Linux's market share reaches 9.7%, with automated systems alone accounting for 19% of the total. Separate data from web traffic analysis site StatCounter showed desktop Linux hitting an all-time high of 10.65% in the North American desktop market, more than double the figure of just over 5% seen in 2025. Cloudflare monitors a substantially larger pool than StatCounter, tracking 24 times as many websites—about a million for StatCounter versus over 24 million for Cloudflare.
The report identifies AI development as the primary explanation for Linux's growth. Linux Foundation CEO Jim Zemlin stated that "Linux is the OS of choice for AI agents." Former Deloitte Consulting managing director David Linthicum described Linux as delivering a true "AI desktop" experience, noting that "setup was straightforward, mainstream AI instructions matched what you'd actually see in your environment, and GPU-accelerated apps simply worked—consistently." Workers drawn to Linux historically include those who want control over their machines, favor open systems, or handle specific tasks like programming and system administration where the platform excels.
Several factors beyond AI are fueling the transition, according to the report. Widespread dissatisfaction with Windows 11, even among Windows enthusiasts, has pushed users to explore alternatives, while Windows 10's end of support has left millions of machines unable to upgrade due to hardware incompatibility—making Linux the path to keeping older computers functional. The report dismisses the perception that Linux remains difficult, pointing out that many distributions are now easy for Windows users to adopt, including Linux Mint, Zorin OS, and VailuxOS. Gaming on Linux has matured thanks to Steam, and installing software has become as simple as using an app store on a smartphone, with basic productivity tools like 1Password, Obsidian, and Microsoft Edge running smoothly on the platform.
