Nutanix has launched a new Model Context Protocol (MCP) server for its Nutanix Cloud Platform, enabling enterprises to safely automate cloud infrastructure tasks using AI assistants. The hybrid multicloud computing company announced the open-source software, which implements the MCP specification to connect AI tools like GitHub Copilot, Claude Code, and Cursor directly to cloud infrastructure. The server translates plain-English commands into precise infrastructure API actions while enforcing existing corporate security and access policies.

The MCP server functions as a secure passthrough between AI assistants and an organization's hybrid multicloud environment, according to Nutanix's announcement. It allows AI agents and developer tools to interact with the Nutanix Cloud Platform through the Nutanix Prism v4 API Gateway, which manages all execution, governance, and security controls. The gateway supports role-based access control that restricts autonomous agents to executing calls only on specific APIs for which they've received explicit, granular authorization. It also provides throttling and metering to help prevent agent swarm attacks while tracking API usage across automated workflows, auditing capabilities that generate detailed system logs showing which AI agent initiated which command, and asynchronous task management that offloads long-running operations so autonomous agents can efficiently monitor progress until completion. IT operators can use AI assistants to analyze system health, surface diagnostics, and stage automation workflows while maintaining operator oversight through human-in-the-loop capabilities.

Developers can generate platform-ready scripts in their preferred coding language by providing AI coding assistants with exact system blueprints upfront, the company said. Developer teams can configure precise security permissions through a single interface or build their own custom AI agents to automate and govern their Nutanix infrastructure from end to end. The coding languages developers can use to generate scripts include Python, Go, Java, JavaScript, PowerShell, curl, or any REST and JSON-compatible format. "By creating a secure gateway between AI tools and our platform, we are giving customers the confidence to safely use AI to operate and govern their hybrid multicloud environments," said Thomas Cornely, executive vice president of Product Management at Nutanix.

The server's architecture reflects a strategy of delegating execution speed to AI agents while keeping governance and security anchored in existing enterprise systems.
