Commvault is expanding its Cloud Rewind cyber recovery technology for Microsoft Azure, tripling the tool's Azure resource coverage to protect infrastructure, configurations, and dependencies that support cloud-native and AI applications. The company announced Tuesday that the update extends protection to 62% of Azure resource types it considers enterprise-relevant, according to a report published by Channel Insider. The expansion aims to help organizations restore complete cloud applications following cyberattacks, outages, and other disruptions rather than focusing only on application data recovery.
The release builds on Commvault's broader effort to extend application-level cyber resilience across hyperscale cloud environments. Earlier this year, the company expanded Cloud Rewind to Google Cloud, adding capabilities to rebuild cloud applications and their dependencies following ransomware attacks, system failures, or deployment errors. Commvault has also deepened its relationship with Microsoft around Azure, including plans for joint go-to-market initiatives, co-selling, solution development, and native access to Commvault's AI and cyber resilience technology through Azure. The expanded Azure resource protection announced Tuesday is expected to become available in the coming months.
Cloud Rewind continuously discovers cloud resources, maps application dependencies, and orchestrates the recovery of applications along with the infrastructure and configurations required to operate them, according to the report. "Modern applications depend on interconnected cloud services, infrastructure, and configurations that must be recovered together," said Pranay Ahlawat, chief technology and AI officer at Commvault. The latest enhancements introduce tighter integration with Commvault's broader backup and recovery platform through Protection Groups, which combine application data and cloud configuration within a single air-gapped recovery workflow. New policy-based protection capabilities can automatically enroll discovered resources based on attributes including tags, regions, and resource types across multiple cloud environments.
The expansion addresses a growing challenge in cloud environments, where interconnected services and configurations can make rebuilding applications after an incident a lengthy process. Commvault is enabling organizations to test application recovery through simulations, including in isolated, air-gapped environments, before an actual disruption occurs. The automation could be particularly relevant for partners and managed service providers responsible for protecting large or rapidly changing customer cloud estates, where manual resource onboarding can add operational overhead. Cloud Rewind is available as an add-on workload in Commvault Cloud, with pricing based on the amount of protected cloud resources. For channel partners juggling multiple client environments at different stages of cloud maturity, the choice between automation and control will shape both their service models and the resilience expectations they can realistically set with customers.
