Oracle is staking its future on artificial intelligence delivering what CEO Mike Sicilia calls "Star Wars" levels of productivity from AI-assisted software engineers, according to remarks he made at Deutsche Bank's 2026 Technology Conference last week. Speaking as the company's stock has fallen sharply over the past year, Sicilia told investors that Big Red's engineers will see explosive gains as the firm embraces the same AI tools it sells to customers. The conference appearance comes as Oracle grapples with industrywide fears of a "SaaSpocalypse" in which AI coding tools could erode the value proposition of business application vendors.
Oracle's workforce shrank by 21,000 people over the last year, dropping from roughly 162,000 employees in May 2025 to approximately 141,000 by May 2026, the company disclosed in its annual report. US-based headcount declined by 9,000 workers, while international staff fell by 12,000. The company has explicitly linked workforce reductions to its AI deployment, stating in regulatory filings that "the adoption and deployment of AI technologies across our operations have resulted, and may continue to result, in reductions to our workforce." Oracle warned it "may initiate new restructuring plans in the future," and acknowledged that "periodic workforce restructurings and reorganizations can be disruptive."
Sicilia, who started his career as a software developer in 1993, said the productivity claims from a single AI-assisted engineer would have seemed like fantasy to his younger self. "I'd have said that's like Star Wars, futuristic stuff. There's no way… but it is real. I mean it is super real. It is incredibly interesting," he told the investor conference. The CEO insisted that AI would disrupt the software industry "in a positive way," arguing that Oracle's ability to transform itself stems from "decades of experience with building and delivering mission-critical applications and infrastructure like Oracle Database." Curiously, Oracle has instructed contributors to OpenJDK—the open source Java project it oversees—not to submit AI-generated code or other material, citing concerns about review workloads, safety, security, and intellectual property in an interim policy post.
The disconnect between Oracle's internal AI enthusiasm and its external AI restrictions reflects broader uncertainty about how generative tools will reshape software development. The company is pushing AI across its operations even as many SaaS firms have watched their valuations collapse this year amid questions about whether AI assistants will commoditize custom software. Oracle's AI push has already touched customers through a relaunched support portal that debuted late last year, which Greg Parikh, Oracle's vice president for information development and operations, said offers AI-powered interactions, streamlined navigation, improved search, and better access to knowledge. Yet customers have complained the AI is "not working that well," reporting that support note numbers vanished, automatic service requests can no longer be created, and users are wasting time on broken or internal links and limited patch searches and downloads.
Oracle's bet on AI-driven productivity comes as the company seeks to prove it can maintain competitiveness while operating with a significantly smaller workforce. The firm's annual report warns of ongoing disruption from restructuring efforts, and its promise of future cuts suggests Oracle views the 21,000-person reduction as the beginning rather than the end of AI-related workforce changes.
